What have AEgIS been up to?

AEgIS


AEgIS is much more than a team, it is an experiment taking place at the CERN facility. It’s primary goal is to measure the effect of Earth’s gravitational field on antihydrogen atoms with significant precision. One of the most exciting things about the AEgIS experiment is that it involves a collaboration between physicists from all over Europe. This means that the work they do is influenced by various techniques and feedback, all aiming to produce more successful results.

Since the end of last year, AEgIS has finished its antiproton run. They have been analysing data for the January report to the CERN Physics Experiments Approval Committee – a yearly obligation that is actually quite important to the experiments. They have commissioned a new trap to demonstrate the aspired trapping efficiency for antiprotons and electrons. Over the next few weeks, they will need to address some ultra-high vacuum problems before the program can continue towards antiproton cooling and Rydberg-positronium formation – the next steps towards determining the intense pulsed source of antihydrogen.

In other news, AEgIS has a new spokesperson, Ruggero Caravita, who succeeds Michael Doser and his decade-long attendance in the role. The biggest welcome to Ruggero!
