Next Chat: Higgs boson

Higgs boson collisionsThe Higgs boson was discovered at CERN in 2012. It’s rare, being created in only 1 in a billion Large Hadron Collider collisions. It’s discovery has confirmed the existence of the Higgs field, a field that fills the entire Universe.

Next Tuesday, 12 December, between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, drop in across the hour to meet the scientists working with the Higgs boson

Tuesday’s Chat: magic wands, super symmetry and the Standard Model

Yesterday, students discovered what CP violation is, with Joel’s excellent magic wand analogy, and deepened their understanding about how developing the Standard Model theory has changed our view of the universe.

9 scientists came along to the text-based, online Chat at 3.30pm. Aspiring physicists from a school in Kent logged in and asked the questions that interested them.

TOMORROW: Discuss the Standard Model with CERN scientists

Photo of a black mug with the CERN Standard Model formula written on it in white, like a chalk board. The Standard Model is the best understanding we have about how three of the four fundamental forces governs the universe. But this theory is incomplete! Scientists at CERN are working to develop and research this theory.

Tomorrow, drop in across the hour to meet the scientists working on this research. Find out what happens when they make a new discovery and when they find a flaw in the theory. Ask them the questions that interest you and deepen your understanding of the Standard Model.
