About Me:
I’m originally from Hungary, but I have studied in the UK and I am currently a PhD student at CERN. My research is focused on the physics of particle accelerators (like the LHC for example). In my freetime I love travelling, playing tennis and reading.

I'm a member of team Beam Team
-
My Work:
My PhD project at CERN involves simulating how particles behave in the accelerators (like the SPS or the LHC) under specific conditions. I am looking into how we can create and use these – along with other cool things like using silicon crystals to bend particles – to deliver better beams to fixed target experiments.

In fixed target experiments the particles moving very fast in the accelerator (collectively called the beam) are directed onto a block of matter that is standing still. This produces all kinds of secondary particles that scientists are interested in studying. However, the beams that are sent to these fixed target experiments are different from the ones that e.g. collide in the LHC and they also have to be extracted from the accelerator in a different manner to ensure the safe operation of the fixed target experiments. This procedure has some drawbacks that we would like to improve on, which is why I am looking into creating conditions in the machine that could make this procedure more efficient.

My work before CERN:
Before I became a PhD student at CERN I have done a few internships during my undergraduate studies at CERN, PSI (the other important accelerator institute in Switzerland) and at Wigner Research Centre for Physics in Budapest, Hungary.
-
What I would like to do next?:
I hope that I will be able to stay for a bit longer at CERN after my PhD, but I also very much like programming in general, so I can see myself moving to industry in a software engineering role.
-
Education:
Primary and high school in Budapest, Hungary (finished in 2018)
Undergraduate degree with integrated Master’s degree (MPhys) at University of Oxford (2018-2022)
PhD at Goethe-Universitat Frankfurt am Main, Germany (2022-present)
-
Qualifications:
As I went to school in Hungary, I do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have A level equivalents in Mathematics, Physics, Hungarian Grammar and Literature, History, Computer Science and English.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
hardworking, persistent physicist
What did you want to be after you left school?
a scientist of some sort
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Not really, I was a mostly well-behaved kid
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Something that involves programming, probably a software engineer
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Panic! at the Disco, Bastille, Imagine Dragons, I can't pick only one...
What's your favourite food?
A Hungarian dish: stuffed cabbage (it sounds strange, but trust me it's amazing!)
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
Be more forgiving with myself, have more time in a day so I can start the 10 more hobbies I have on my to-do list, and a house with a big garden where I can keep at least a dozen dogs!
Tell us a joke.
What sound does a subatomic duck make? - Quark.
